Flood of March 1913

Disaster tourism in the early twentieth century. This crowd is purportedly surveying the damage done by the Easter flood. A closer look, however, reveals that all the people are looking at the photographer and not at the damage. Given the fancy clothing of both men and women it is fair to assume that these folks did not come out to help with mitigating the damage done by the floodwaters.

These four photographs were taken during the flood that occurred on June 19, 1939. The photographs in the lower right shows a scene in Midway; the other three photographs were taken in Lakeview.
