Orchard Island

In the midst of the Great Depression, Mr. Karl Stumpp built a fifteen-room hotel called the Shore Gables, a handful of cottages, and a boat landing. Mr. Stumpp added a grocery store where he sold camping and fishing supplies, in addition to groceries. Ultimately, the hotel was converted to apartments before it was torn down.

The view of the Stumpp Resort shown on the postcard on the right is from Fox Island, where one of the State Parks is now located. The playground is not in use by children staying at the cottages, but there are a few people along the shore and in the row boats.
