Sandee Gables

Sandee Gables was an artificial island, a few hundred feet west of Wolf Island. The structure was built on a wood and concrete platform, and included dressing rooms for the swimmers, and rooms for dining and dancing, with bands performing every night. The excursion boat “Evelyn” ferried people to and from the island. The island was initially owned by the Wilgus family but sold later to Oliver Strauss. The fate of the structure was rather unceremonious: over the years, the lake water caused the wooden supports to weaken and ultimately break, causing the concrete floor to sink to the bottom of the lake, where it probably still rests.
